An American inaugural poet, Amanda Gorman was born on the 7th of March, 1998 in Los Angeles, California, U.S. Gorman was raised by her mother who was a single parent named, Joan Wicks. Her mother worked in a school as a 6th-grade English teacher.

Amanda Gorman Has a twin sister as well with the name, Gabrielle, who is a filmmaker and an activist.

Amanda at a young age called herself a “weird child” who was so enthusiastic about reading and writing. Her mother always glorified and encouraged her skills.

Gorman is hypersensitive to sound and has an auditory processing disorder that makes it difficult for her in pronouncing the letter “r”. During her childhood, Gorman had a speech impediment, and to overcome this thing she took part in speech therapy.

According to Elida Kocharian of The Harvard Crimson, Gorman never views her speech impediment as a buttress rather she views it as her strength and as a gift.

In response to this, Amanda Gorman told The Harvard Gazette “I always considered my speech impediment as my strength because when I struggled with these hindrances or obstacles at my speech therapy, I became better by time in reading and writing.”

At the time of her speech therapy, Amanda Gorman had sung different songs to practice the letter “r”. Gorman’s favorite song for the practice was “Aaron Burr, Sir” from Hamilton.

She picked up that song because it is jam-packed with a lot of “R’s” which help her to pronounce the letter “r” in her poem.

Amanda Gorman at a young age was enrolled in a private school, New Roads, placed in Santa Monica, California for grades K-12.

Being passionate about writing and reading she got a scholarship as a senior, titled ‘Milken Family Foundation college scholarship’.

Later she went to Harvard University for further studies. In 2020, she completed her graduation and did B.A major in Sociology. Gorman was also supported by IES Abroad to spend a semester studying in Madrid, Spain.

In April 2017, during the time of her graduation at Harvard University, she became the first individual to be titled as “National Youth Poet Laureate”.

Career and Achievements

Amanda Gorman experienced a lot of things since her childhood.  Because of her dedication towards her work that focused on different issues, she achieved the title of “National Youth Poet Laureate” in 2017.

In 2015, at the age of 16 she launched the poetry book named, “The One for Whom Food Is Not Enough” which was also considered as one of her earlier works.

Amanda’s enthusiasm toward her works has won several hearts and also won her invites to the ‘Obama White House’.

Gorman’s two books achieved the best-seller status, through which she received a professional management contract. She has become the first poet commissioned to pen a poem to be read at the Super Bowl.

Later she executed several commissioned poems for the news-program.

In February 2021, Amanda Gorman became the first poet to perform at the Super Bowl and was also highlighted in Time magazine’s 100 next lists under the category of “Phenoms”.

Gorman is an executive director and the founder of “One Pen One Page”, an organization that helps young individuals by providing free creative writing programs.
